SOP for Determination of Total Suspended Solids
Scope
This method is for the determination of total suspended solid in water.
Principle
Non filterable residue is determined by passing the sample through a weighed filter and drying the filter at 103 – 105 deg c. OR 179 – 181 deg c. non filterable residue is calculated from the increase in mass of the filter.
Apparatus
Glass fiber filter or Whatman 42, Filtering Apparatus, Drying Oven, Desiccator, Analytical balance
Procedure
- Dry filter paper in oven at 103 – 105 deg c. for about 1 hour, cool in the desiccator and weight.
- Take 1000 ml of sample volume for potable water and for other type of water take 100 ml of sample volume.
- Filter through the glass fiber filter paper or Whatman 42, apply filter suction pump if filtration is slow.
- After filtration is over wash the residue on the filter paper with distilled water and filter.
- After filtration, transfer the filter paper with content to an oven maintained at 103 – 105 deg c. For 1 hour.
- After complete drying, cool in desiccator and take final weight. Repeat the drying cycle till constant mass is obtained.
Calculation
TSS (mg/l) = Mass x 1000/Volume of Sample
Safety Guideline
Proper safety & health precaution are taken while doing the analysis by using safety goggles, apron, safety shoes & using fume chamber for fume generating chemicals and gloves for oven.
